Pet Safety 101: Sally’s Tips for a Safe and Happy Home

At Sally’s Picks Shop, we know how important it is to create a safe and happy home for your furry friends. After all, Sally is always on the move – whether she’s exploring new corners of the house, finding hidden treasures (aka socks), or getting into a little mischief! With her safety in mind, we’ve put together a list of essential tips to keep your pet happy and secure at home.

Here are Sally’s top tips for a pet-safe home:

1. Hide Hazardous Items

Dogs are naturally curious, and they tend to explore the world with their mouths. Make sure to store harmful household items like cleaning products, medications, and human food (especially chocolate, grapes, and onions) out of reach. Sally’s advice? “If you wouldn’t want me to eat it, don’t leave it where I can find it!”

Tip: Keep hazardous items in high cabinets or pet-proof containers. Make sure to use trash cans with secure lids, as some dogs love to rummage for “hidden treats.”

2. Secure Small Objects

Tiny items such as coins, rubber bands, hairpins, and even small children’s toys can be choking hazards. Sally’s rule of thumb? “If it fits in my mouth, it’s probably a bad idea to leave it lying around!”

Tip: Do a sweep of your floors regularly, especially if your pet likes to chew. Tidying up is a great habit for both pet safety and a clean home.

3. Watch Electrical Cords

Cords can look like chew toys to your dog, but they’re incredibly dangerous. Not only can they cause electrical shocks, but if chewed, they may lead to burns or other injuries.

Tip: Use cord protectors or tape cords against walls to keep them out of reach. Sally says, “Chew on a toy instead – trust me, it’s way more fun and much safer!”

4. Secure Heavy Furniture

If your dog is anything like Sally, she’s got a lot of energy and loves to run and jump. Make sure heavy furniture like bookcases, TVs, and mirrors are securely mounted to avoid accidents if your dog bumps into them during playtime.

Tip: Attach heavy items to walls using furniture straps to prevent them from toppling over.

5. Create a Safe Zone

Even the most adventurous pets need a place where they can relax and feel secure. Set up a cozy spot in your home where your dog can rest when they need quiet time. Sally’s favorite spot? “A comfy bed by the window where I can nap and keep an eye on the outside world.”

Tip: Add a soft bed, a blanket, and some of your dog’s favorite toys to their safe zone, creating a peaceful retreat they can return to when they need to unwind.

6. Pet-Proof Your Plants

While having plants around the house adds beauty, some common plants are toxic to pets. Keep an eye out for potentially harmful plants like lilies, aloe vera, and ivy, and be sure they’re placed somewhere your dog can’t reach.

Tip: Research pet-safe plants like spider plants, Boston ferns, or areca palms if you want to keep greenery without the risk. Sally says, “Plants are nice, but make sure they’re the non-snackable kind!”

7. Use Pet-Friendly Cleaning Products

Household cleaners can be filled with harsh chemicals that are harmful to pets. When cleaning your floors, furniture, or other surfaces, opt for pet-safe products that won’t irritate your dog’s sensitive paws or skin.

Tip: Look for eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaning solutions, or try making your own using simple ingredients like vinegar and baking soda. “I prefer floors that don’t smell like chemicals,” says Sally, “so I can zoom around worry-free!”

8. Check Windows and Balconies

Dogs are often curious about what’s going on outside, but open windows or balconies can pose a risk. Sally’s advice? “I love a good breeze, but let’s keep things safe – close those windows when I’m around!”

Tip: Make sure all windows are securely screened and that balconies are either blocked off or equipped with fencing to prevent any potential accidents.

9. Invest in Safe Toys

Not all dog toys are created equal. Some can easily break apart, creating choking hazards or swallowing risks. When picking out toys, always choose ones that are designed for durability and safety – Sally’s favorites are the ones that can handle some serious playtime!

Tip: Inspect toys regularly for any signs of wear and tear, and replace them if they start falling apart.

10. Stay Alert for Seasonal Hazards

Different seasons bring different dangers. In the warmer months, watch out for overheating and toxic garden plants, while colder months can bring the risk of antifreeze poisoning or frostbite. Keep an eye on your dog’s environment year-round.

Tip: Sally says, “If it’s too hot for your hand on the pavement, it’s too hot for my paws! And when it’s cold, I love wearing my cozy jacket!”

By following these simple tips, you’ll create a safe and happy environment for your dog. At Sally’s Picks Shop, we care about your pets just as much as Sally, which is why we always recommend safe, high-quality products that your furry friend will love.
